Maurice White was a singer, songwriter, percussionist and drum set artist originally from Memphis, Tennessee, in the United States, where he was a childhood friend, and band mate, of Booker T Jones. As a teenager, he moved to Chicago where, after some session work with Chess Records, he went on to found to Earth, Wind & Fire.
